Quick answer
What is the format of a net worth certificate?
A net worth certificate format is a one or two page document on a CA's letterhead: addressee, applicant name and PAN, the date of computation, total assets, total liabilities and net worth in figures and words, schedules for each asset class, the valuation basis, and the CA's signature, membership number, UDIN, place and date. The recipient's template overrides any generic layout.
- No government-prescribed format exists for individuals
- Embassy, bank or tender templates take priority
- Company net worth follows Companies Act section 2(57)
- Every certificate carries the CA's UDIN
What are the parts of a net worth certificate format?
Six blocks appear in almost every certificate, whatever the purpose. Knowing them lets you give the CA the right information in one go.
| Block | What it contains | Who supplies it |
|---|---|---|
| Heading and addressee | Title and recipient, or "to whom it may concern" | Recipient's checklist or template |
| Applicant details | Name, parentage, address, PAN, passport for visas, CIN or GSTIN for entities | You |
| Certification paragraph | What was examined, the date of computation, net worth in figures and words | CA |
| Statement and schedules | Movable assets, immovable assets, liabilities, totals | CA from your documents |
| Basis and restriction | Valuation basis per asset class and the purpose the certificate may be used for | CA |
| Signature block | Firm name, FRN, CA name, membership number, UDIN, place, date | CA |
Formats for banks and tenders often add declarations about guarantees given or pending litigation.

What is the usual certificate wording?
The wording says what the CA examined, for what purpose, the date and the result, then limits use to that purpose. A typical draft for an individual reads as below; square brackets are placeholders.
NET WORTH CERTIFICATE
To whom it may concern [or: The Visa Officer / The Tender Committee / The Branch Manager, as the recipient requires]
We have examined the documents listed in Annexure 1, produced before us by [Applicant name], son/daughter/spouse of [name], residing at [address], PAN [XXXXX0000X], Passport No. [X0000000], for the purpose of [state purpose, e.g. application for a student visa to the United Kingdom].

Net worth certificate format for a company (illustrative)
For a company the CA starts from the audited balance sheet and applies section 2(57) of the Companies Act 2013: paid-up share capital, reserves created out of profits, securities premium and the profit and loss balance, less accumulated losses, deferred expenditure and miscellaneous expenditure not written off. Revaluation, depreciation write-back and amalgamation reserves are left out.
Illustrative only: placeholder values, not a real person or company. The certifying CA drafts the final certificate.
| Item | Treatment | ₹ lakh |
|---|---|---|
| Paid-up equity share capital | Included | 50.00 |
| Securities premium | Included | 30.00 |
| General reserve created out of profits | Included | 40.00 |
| Profit and loss credit balance | Included | 55.00 |
| Miscellaneous expenditure not written off | Deducted | (2.00) |
| Revaluation reserve of 25.00 | Excluded by s.2(57) | 0.00 |
| Net worth | 173.00 |
A tender or lender may define net worth differently; the CA then follows that definition and says so.
How does the format change for a proprietor, partnership firm or LLP?
Firms and LLPs have no statutory net worth definition like section 2(57), so the CA works from capital accounts in the latest accounts and states the basis. A proprietor's certificate often combines the business capital with personal assets, because in law the two are one person.
| Entity | Starting point | Extra detail usually shown |
|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietor | Proprietor's balance sheet plus personal assets | Business name, GSTIN, capital account |
| Partnership firm | Partners' capital and current accounts | Partner-wise capital, debit balances deducted |
| LLP | Partners' contribution and retained profits | LLPIN, contribution per partner |
| Company | Audited balance sheet under s.2(57) | CIN, balance sheet date, excluded reserves |
Tender annexures sometimes ask for net worth for each of the last three years; the CA then repeats the computation per year.
What does each line of the net worth certificate format mean?
Each line answers a question the reader will ask: whose assets, on what date, valued how, and who vouches for it.
- Date of computation: the day the balances are taken; it should match your statements, not the date of signing.
- Share in joint assets: shown at your share per the deed.
- Basis column: tells the reader whether a value is market, cost or a valuer's figure.
- Liabilities: every loan, including guarantees if the template asks.
- Figures in words: stops alteration of the total.
- Restriction on use: limits the certificate to the stated purpose.
- UDIN: links the paper to the CA on ICAI's portal.
Which annexures should be attached to a net worth certificate?
Attach a list of documents examined and copies the recipient wants to see. Visa files usually need the underlying statements anyway; tenders often want only the certificate and audited accounts.
| Annexure | When it is used |
|---|---|
| List of documents examined | Almost always; supports the basis paragraph |
| Valuation report for property or jewellery | When market value is shown |
| Bank and investment statements | Visa and loan files |
| Audited balance sheet | Company, LLP and firm certificates for tenders |
| Exchange rate reference | When a foreign currency total is shown |
Our business valuation page explains when a formal valuation report is needed for unlisted holdings.
What mistakes do people make with a net worth certificate format?
The most common one is downloading a sample, filling it in and asking a CA to sign it as is. A CA must examine records and decide the basis, so a self-made draft usually gets rewritten.
- Using a generic sample when the embassy, bank or tender prescribes its own template.
- Leaving out schedules, so totals cannot be traced.
- Mixing dates across statements.
- Applying the individual layout to a company instead of section 2(57).
- Copying a sample's figures or another firm's details, which risks a forged document.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an ICAI or government net worth certificate format?
We found no government-prescribed format for individuals. The CA uses professional judgement and the recipient's template. For companies, the definition in section 2(57) of the Companies Act 2013 sets what counts.
Can I download a net worth certificate sample in Word?
Samples circulate online, but a sample is only a guide. Give the CA your documents and the recipient's template; the CA prepares the draft on the firm's letterhead.
What is the net worth certificate format for an individual?
A summary of movable assets, immovable assets and liabilities with schedules, the net worth in figures and words, the valuation basis, and the CA's signature block with UDIN, as in the illustrative tables above.
What is the net worth certificate format for a company?
It lists paid-up capital and eligible reserves from the audited balance sheet, deducts accumulated losses and unwritten-off expenditure, and excludes revaluation reserves, with CIN, balance sheet date and the CA's details.
Can a proprietor show business and personal assets together?
Usually yes, since a proprietorship is not a separate legal person. The CA separates business and personal lines in the schedules so the reader can see both, and deducts business loans as well as personal ones.
Should the format show foreign currency?
Only if the recipient needs it, usually for visas. The CA shows rupees and the foreign amount with the rate, its source and its date.
Who signs a net worth certificate?
A practising chartered accountant, as proprietor or partner of the firm, with membership number and UDIN. Read our guide on choosing a chartered accountant to verify the signer.
Can the same format be used for a solvency certificate?
No. A solvency certificate in Delhi is issued by the SDM or a bank on their own forms. See our solvency certificate page.
Is a turnover certificate laid out the same way?
No. It shows revenue for each financial year, not assets and liabilities. See our turnover certificate page.
